Dual Monitors with a Single Computer

Article Summary

Can I use two monitors (dual monitors) on a single computer? The answer depends on what you are trying to accomplish by having a second monitor.

Overview

Various situations are described below wherein you may or may not be able to accomplish your goal with dual monitors on the same computer. However, keep in mind that the use of dual monitors is a computer issue which is not directly related to ProCare. You may need the advice of a local computer technician (or your IT department) to assist with the necessary settings and equipment.

Example 1: (No)

I want to use one monitor for families (and/or employees) to check in and out while another is used at the same time to work in the main part of ProCare (like Family Data & Accounting) or to do general office work (email, word processing, etc).

Can I do this? No. Unfortunately this is not feasible, because a single computer cannot have two different inputs (users) at the same time. For example, a person cannot be checking in with a touch screen or mouse (input 1) while someone else is using the keyboard (input 2).

What are my alternatives? You’ll need two separate computers (each with a single monitor) networked together. With two computers, two people can be working at the same.

Example 2: (Yes)

I want to keep an eye on who is checking in and see what each person is doing on the check-in screen.

Can I do this? Yes. It is possible to have two monitors that “mirror” each other meaning monitor 2 displays exactly what is happening on monitor 1. Contact your local computer technician for assistance.
