Keyless Entry System Door Won’t Open

Step-by-Step – The KES Door doesn’t open:

  1. Begin by testing the keypad.

    a. Press Start on the keypad. Does the red LED “Ready” light come on? If YES, continue. If not, Contact Technical Support.

    b. Try entering an ID code. Press Start then enter an ID Code then press Open. Does the green LED “Accept” light come on? If YES, then continue. If not, Contact Technical Support.

  2. Next, test the by-pass button.If you have a by-pass button (manual open) does pressing it open the door? If YES, continue. If not, meaning the door still does not open, then the problem is likely to be in the door circuit. Contact your local electrician/installer.

  3. Then, test the Relay Box. Locate the connections labeled Door Control Circuit on the relay box. These connections are labeled NC, C and NO. Wires should be connected to two of the three terminals. Make a note of the terminals to which the wires are attached. Next, carefully remove these two low voltage wires from the Door Control Circuit.

    a. If the wires were attached to the NO and C terminals (as in the image, typical for a standard electric door strike) then touch them together. Does the door open? If YES, then Contact Technical Support. If not, then it is likely a problem with the door circuit wiring. Contact your local electrician/installer.
    b. If the wires were attached to the NC and C terminals (typical for a magnetic lock) does removing them from the Relay Box cause the door to open? If YES, then Contact Technical Support. If not, then it is likely a problem with the door circuit wiring. Contact your local electrician/installer.

  4. At this point, further testing of the Relay Box using a handheld Multimeter may be appropriate.
    a. Make sure the wires connected to the NC, C or NO terminals have been removed.
    b. Set the voltmeter to measure resistance (usually indicated by an R or an ohm symbol Ω). It doesn’t matter which resistance setting you choose like Rx1 or Rx10, etc.
    c. Place one end of the voltmeter into the C terminal and the other into either the NO (typical for a standard electric door strike) or NC terminal (typical for a magnetic lock).
    d. Have someone go to the keypad and press Start, enter an ID Code, and then press Open.
    e. Does the resistance shown on the multimeter change?
    For a standard electric door strike it should go from infinite (no current) to zero (full current flowing). For a magnetic lock it would be the reverse going from zero (full current flowing) to infinite resistance (no current).If the resistance did NOT change, then Contact Technical Support. If the resistance DID change then the problem is not likely to be with the relay box. Try connecting the wires back to the appropriate terminals or contact your local electrician/installer for further assistance.
